How often do you work?
I work three days a week running sessions and then about two evenings a week on admin. It all depends really on how many birthday party or private bookings I have taken on.
How does the job fit around your family life?
Mess Around is the perfect fit around a busy family life. You get the freedom to plan the sessions as and when you want. The school drop off and pick up is still achievable and I can take my children along to public sessions in the holidays.
How much time do you commit?
Again, this depends on how busy I am with bookings. Approx 20-30 hours a week.
Where do you carry out your work?
I run my sessions in a designated territory. The territory is protected and I use village halls, community centres and scout huts in my area. I also run sessions in schools and nurseries.
Do you need a car?
Yes! There is a lot of equipment to carry around, I use a people carrier but I know other franchisees that have trailers or vans
Do you get support/training?
Yes, there are bitesize training videos for all to access, there is a GDrive full of assets and plans etc. The franchisor is on hand to answer any questions and there is a WhatsApp group for the franchises who are always quick to support too. An annual conference is held and external training is normally offered at this too.
Would you recommend this opportunity to others?
I love the fact that the children have the freedom to explore, I also love how family-friendly it is. I can work as much or as little as I like without feeling pressured or guilty. The multiple revenue streams mean I can pick and mix my business. The franchisor is always listening to ideas and improving or adapting things if needed.
Do you advertise?
Primarily on Facebook and Instagram, I often use flyers to leaflet new areas and “people shop” as I walk about the area. I rely a lot on word-of-mouth referrals too, which is important to me as I think these are a great indicator of how well the business is doing.
Are there any downsides to the role?
Working on your own can be lonely at times but there is a great support network within the franchise.
It can be hard work, especially when very messy but I turn my music on and get on with the cleanup!
